Grants Will Bring Kids to Crater Lake

CRATER LAKE, OR  – The Crater Lake National Park Trust has provided a grant of $20,500 to allow some 2,500 students to visit Crater Lake National Park this spring through the "Classroom at Crater Lake" Program.

"Crater Lake is a spectacular 'classroom without walls' and a fantastic place for kids to get excited about science," noted Crater Lake National Park Trust Executive Director Jeff Allen.

The Classroom at Crater Lake program, which began in 2004 with a few hundred students, is now reaching some 5,000 students annually from across the region. Over half of these students come from lower-income schools, and over half have never previously visited Crater Lake National Park.

"Classroom at Crater Lake is a wonderful opportunity for teachers and students, and we are grateful to the Trust and to the individuals and foundations that have made it possible," noted Park Superintendent Craig Ackerman.

This project was made possible in part by the Klamath Medical Service Bureau Foundation, the Gray Family Fund, the US Bancorp Foundation, the Juan Young Trust, the Bank of America Foundation, the Pacific Power Foundation, the Carpenter Foundation, and the Campbell Foundation.

"Crater Lake is an icon, and we are very pleased to be able to partner with the Trust and so many other regional foundations to help children experience this special place," noted Bank of America Senior Vice President Rich Brown.
